Two people are seated at a meeting table in a modern office conference room. One person is in sharp focus on the right side of the image, wearing a dark blazer and white collared shirt, seated with hands clasped on the table. Another person is visible in the foreground on the left, softly out of focus, creating depth in the composition. A notebook and an open laptop rest on the table, while glass walls and reflections of the office interior form the background. Natural daylight illuminates the space, and a shallow depth of field keeps the person on the right in focus while the foreground and background remain softly blurred.

Our history in South Africa

The Rothschild family’s business interests on the African continent began in the 1880s, when Nathaniel, 1st Lord Rothschild realised the investment potential in the country’s gold and diamond mines. A visit to South Africa by his specialist agent convinced the London house that the market would best develop through partnership and amalgamation, and with Rothschild support, de Beers consolidated its position as the world leader in diamond mining.
